Font Analysis

Psycho Font

the font of Psycho is extremely eye catching, the words PSYCHO is spelled out in capital letters to attract viewers and so it can stand out. the colour of the font is white, white is often associated with purity and innocence so it could be used to show the innocence of the victims. furthermore the white is used so that it can stand out amongst the dark black background. this dark background can be used to represent danger and can portray that something dark and evil is hidden. also the crack cutting through the middle of the title makes the title rather unpleasant and can be used to represent to the viewer that there is danger lurking. furthermore the cut also looks like a knife slit, cutting through the word. this can be to portray that there is something sinister in the film a murder is going to take place. this font matches the title well as it shows the viewer that there is some kind of mad murderer praying and slashing at innocent victims.

Jaws Font

the font of jaws certainly shows that the film is of a thriller genre. firstly the bright bold red is used to indicate danger, anger and blood. Also, like Psycho, the title is in capital letters. this is so it can stand out and catch the viewers eye. the edges of the font are sharp yet wavy, this could be to represent Jaws because, since it is a large killer shark it will eat anything in sight also it has razor sharp teeth to rip its prey apart. the titles corners can be used to indicate Jaws and his incredibly large white teeth or even the first dorsal fin which is revealed slowly from within the water thus alerting the other characters. this gives the viewer a sense of danger.

Se7en

the font of the film Se7en is quite unnerving and  rather off putting. this shows the viewer that it is of a thriller genre. Again, the font is in capital letters as to make it catch the viewers eye and attracts them to watching the film. the font is quite tall and slim making it seem rather skinny and almost rather unhealthy. the font is slightly disorientated and blurry, this makes the title seem rather spooky and haunting. furthermore the dark brown background make the title look mysterious and uninviting. also the different words placed around the films title in different fonts create enigmas in the viewers mind. furthermore each word has a different font, this could be to show that the character/s are unorganised, angry and seem as though they are deranged, thus matching the context of the film perfectly.

                                                                        Children of Men

the font of Children of Men is rather eye catching and yet mysterious. the harshness of the red stands out and against the calm white. the word 'Children' are in a bright red whereas 'of Men' are in white. this could be to emphasis on the word 'Children' as they are a major part of the plot. furthermore children are usually associated with purity and innocence, however the red suggests that they are in danger. this contrasts with the words 'of Men'. men are usually seen as aggressive and violent however they are shown in white. this could be to portray that the tables have turned and so now the children are more dangerous than the men. however it could also be to show that men can also be innocent themselves. the title can also be used to create many enigmas in the viewers mind such as 'What is the main plot of the film?'.

DVD Poster Analysis

Shutter Island

This is a poster of Shutter Island, a film by Martin Scorsese. The poster shows famous actor Leonardo Di Caprio (star of the titanic and Romeo and Juliet) holding a lighted match. Below him is a small island surrounded by dark blue water. This water could represent captivity and imprisonment, showing the audience that the characters in the film are trapped with no hope of escape. The flame the Leonardo is holding could be there to represent that he is the flame of hope and he will provide light of the other characters. Furthermore Leonardo’s name is shown in bold, white letters and is placed directly above the title of the film. This is to show the audience that he stars in it so Leonardo fans will want to consume the film. Also it shows that he the antagonist of the film, meaning that he is one of the main characters. the colour of this font is white, white is often related to innocence and purity. this could be to portray Leonardo as an innocent and feeble character.

Placed directly underneath is the title of the film 'Shutter Island' in capital, bright red letters. this stands out most from the poster and is used to attract potential audiences. furthermore red is usually associated with love, danger and anger, this shows the viewer that there is danger and even murder used in the film. the bright red stands out amongst the dark blue background, this is so it is easier to spot and is one of the first things the viewer spots. likewise, the word 'October' is also shown in bright, bold red letters. again this is so the viewer will see it and be informed that the film is released October, however they do not know when so they will have to wait and see, this then keeps the viewer interested and engaged in the film more.

The dark monotone colours used makes the poster seem sinister and eerie. this is so it can convey to its viewers that the production includes danger and is possibly a thriller or horror genre. furthermore the viewer can see rain, rain is usually used to promote a sad mood or some form of a storm. in this poster the rain is used to promote a storm which, again gives the viewer a hint of danger and makes the poster more mysterious. however the first thing the viewer spots is Leonardo holding the flame. however only one side of his face is showing clearly. this could be because the dark shadows on his face shows he has a dark side and possibly a hidden secret. his facial expression is rather anxious and worried yet and the same time looks like he is searching for something, this matches this then creates enigmas in the audiences minds such as "Who is this character?". moreover the line "Someone is missing" plants many enigmas into the viewers mind such as "Who is missing?" and "What happened to them?" and also connects to Leonardo's facial expression as he seems to be looking for something, or someone.

Iconic Sounds

The Ward

The soundtrack of The Ward was created by Mark Kilian. it is rather unnerving and unpleasant, it makes the audience feel scared and builds tension within the film. furthermore the woman singing slowly gives the film an eerie feel. in this soundtrack a violin and drums are used. the violins are a used to create suspense and the drums are used to shock the audience and to create surprise. furthermore it is often used between the most scariest parts of the film creating a lot of tension for the audience and informs them that there is danger lurking.

                                                                       The Ring

The soundtrack of the Ring was created by Hans Zimmer. it is also rather creepy and unnerving. it includes a young girl singing rather disturbing lyrics. it makes the production seem more scary and plants an enigma into the audiences mind such as 'What does that mean?'. furthermore the slow sounding music box playing in the background gives the film a rather unpleasant feel and creates a lot of tension in the film. furthermore the young girls voice singing in the background links back to the film as it involves a young girl. furthermore the score has a rather calming yet unsettling feel about it, thus matching the whole concept of the film perfectly and setting a perfect mood for the film.

Psycho

The soundtrack of Psycho was created by Bernard Herrmann. it is extremely well known and popular throughout the thriller film industry. the famous screeching of the violins match the murder scene perfectly as it builds up suspense and tension within the scene and keeps the audience in shock. furthermore the high pitch of the violin make it very unpleasant to difficult to listen to thus making the soundtrack perfect for a thriller genre. furthermore the high pitched violin streaks almost sound like screaming which makes the scene disturbing and uneasy.

Initial Ideas

My First Idea

My original idea was to use a long, dark and rather unnerving corridor. slightly like a hospital corridor at night. the camera was then going to zoom onto a door labelled with the number "666". the camera zooms in more and goes through the closed door revealing a small child crying on a bed at the far left end of the room. however the audience can only see her back. the camera stops by the side of the child and rotates round revealing the characters face and two nurses standing and waiting at the door in the background. the two nurses then walk into the room and lift up the child by her arms. the scene then cuts showing the girl being escorted down the corridor with a nurse at each arm. the camera follows behind and also in front as to see the main characters facial expression. the scene then cuts to another door, the door opens and a surgeon stands next to a chair is revealed. the child then refuses to walk into the room and tries to break free of the two nurses, however the nurses grab her by the arms and drag her into the room. the scene then cuts to the girl getting strapped into the small chair. her arms, legs and neck are firmly strapped down so she cannot move. the camera then goes into her point of view and the audience see the surgeon hovering over holding a needle. the camera then cuts to seeing the surgeon placing the needle at the top of the girls eye. it then goes back into the characters point of view and the audience see the surgeon hold the needle in place and holding a small hammer in the other hand. the surgeon then brings the hammer down upon the needle. the camera then cuts to seeing the girls hand clenching to represent that she is in pain and then it relaxes.  the camera then cuts and the audience see the back of the girls head, still seated in the chair and surrounded by nurses and the surgeon. the camera zooms out and another man dressed in a suit is revealed. he addresses the surgeon "i you sure this will work" to which the surgeon replies "of course...lobotomy procedures work all the time, she wont remember a thing...not even her own name".  the camera carries on zooming out and reveals a window. the camera then stops showing only the widow and the name 'Emma' is revealed scratched on the window. although i was initially happy with this idea i came to the realization that it was too long and so i had to find something shorter i could use instead.

 My Second Idea

This idea is slightly similar to my first. in this idea a camera pans down a log corridor, the same as in the first idea. the camera then goes through a small window in the door revealing a young girl sitting on the bed. this time however she is sitting with her legs dangling off the edge of the bed. two nurses are standing in front of her. the camera then stops zooming and the first nurse addresses the child "I'm terribly sorry...but your mother is dead" she says this with a lack of sympathy and her facial expressions show that she wants to be somewhere else. the girl on the bed then starts to cry and breaks down due to this horrendous news and says to herself "i dont want to spend my life in this place". the first nurse then bends down so she is level with the child, and says to her "well...you shouldve thought of that before you killed her shouldn't you". the second nurse then laughs. the girl on the bed then looks up, the audience see her face is covered in tears. the girl then says "no". the first nurse then replies "what?". the camera then cuts to behind the girl and the audience see  that she is holding a small kitchen knife with her left hand. the camera then cuts back to the front of the girls face, she stands slowly and reveals the knife to the tow nurses "no..i will not be spending my life in this hell hole, i did not kill my mother and i am definitely NOT crazy!" the girl then gets the knife and slits the first nurses throat, she falls to the floor. the girl then turns slowly towards the second nurse who is terrified, the nurse starts to slowly walk backwards towards the door. the girl carries on walking towards her holding the knife now covered in blood. the camera then zooms out of the door so the audience can only see the outside of the door. from within the room the audience hear the second nurse hear "no..please..nooo" and the sounds stop, blood then splatters against from within the door window and the sound of a heavy object falling to the ground is heard. the camera then zooms into the door window and the name 'Emma' is revealed in the blood. although i liked this idea i didnt think it was scary enough to be called a thriller.

 My Third idea

this idea is rather different from my other two ideas. in this idea the audience see a woman kissing the forehead of a young child and says "goodnight sweetie". the woman then leaves the room and closes the door behind her. next to that door is another door which is clearly and firmly shut. the camera then rejoins the woman who is walking down some stairs. she then sits on a sofa, picks up a magazine and starts to read. the camera then cuts back to the clearly and firmly shut door. then the door handle moves and the door opens approximately 5cm. the camera then crane shots over the woman, a 'thump' noise is heard and the woman looks up at the camera. it then cuts to the woman walking back up the stairs and quietly opens the door of her child's room. the scene then cuts and the audience see that the child is still asleep. the woman then closes the door slowly with a look of confusion on her face. she starts to walk and then stops. she realizes that the clearly and firmly closed door is now open. she turns around and looks at it, puzzled. she grabs the door handle and opens it revealing the room. the camera thten cuts to an over the shoulder shot and reveals a small, dark room. at the very end of the room is a wide white empty bookcase. the camera then cuts back to the characters face as she looks down. on the floor she sees a small china doll. the woman walks toward it and picks it up. the camera then goes into a point of view shot and show the doll to the audience. the doll has curly brown hair and green eyes, however one of her eys are missing. the dolls face is pure white and has a small crack on the left side of its face, its lips are smiling and its dress is red with a white heart sown onto a pocket in the middle of the dress. the audience can see that there is something in this pocket but it is not shown as the woman does not take it out. the woman studies the doll and puts it onto the bookcase, she then turns and walks towards the door. all of a sudden the woman hears the 'thump' again, she turns around and the doll is back on the floor in the exact same position it was in before.   the woman, getting slightly worried puts it back and turns to the door again. as before she hears a 'thump', she turns around slowly and three more dolls have appeared. unlike the first one they are propped up neatly on the bookcase, their little red lips smiling. the woman, now rather frightened turns and runs towards the door. then, just as before she hears a much louder 'THUMP'. she turns around and the dolls have gotten closer to her, now sitting on the floor in the exact same position. the woman panics and grabs the door handle.  however it is lcoked and she cannot open the door. another 'THUMP' is heard and she turns slowly around. the room is full of small china dolls, each wearing different old fashioned clothing and smiling. the first doll is at the front, sitting up right on the floor. she is much closer to the woman then the others, in her hand she holds a knife. the woman is so scared she freazes and her eyes move about the room looking at each doll. then she looks down and the first doll is sitting by her feet with the knife still in its hand. the woman kicks it and runs to the door, she tries the handle again but itss no use the door is still locked. the audience teh see the woman slowly turning her head and scream. the scene then cuts to the outside of the door, the audience can hear screaming from behind the door and then it goes silent. all is heard is a clock ticking in the background. then the scene cuts to the first doll again, propped up on the bookcase, her face is covered in blood. then you see its lips curl into a smile and the words 'Dolls' appear in red font, covering the screen. i didnt use this idea as, although it was quite scary, i am not able to buy a whole room full of china dolls and also i thought it may be too long so i had to scrap the idea.

My Fourth Idea

Totally disregarding my doll idea i headed   back to my hospital one. in this idea i created the same sort of characters. a nurse is seen walking down a corridor holding a tray, the contents of the tray is a bowl of tomato soup, half a baguette and a spoon. the nurse walks down a corridor, the sound of her heels going 'clik clak' is heard and echoes through the corridor. she stops outside a room labelled with the numbers 666. she reaches into her pocket and finds a small key. she uses it to unlock the door and places the keys back into her pocket. she goes to reach the door handle to open it when all of a sudden it opens by itself. the door opens slowly revealing a small room. at the far left corner of the room is a single bed. in the middle of the room is a girl, around the age of 16, sitting on a chair. her hair covers her face which is looking down and her hands are placed neatly on her lap. behind her on the wall are three pieces of paper, stuck on the wall by pins. on the paper are drawings, each of these drawings are covered in red. the camera then cuts back to the nurse, she stands out the doorway feeling slightly uneasy and addresses the child "Emma...its time for lunch". Emma stays perfectly still in  her position. then the nurse hears a sort of yelling sound and turns her head to the left. there is silence. the nurse turns her head back to look at Emma and jumps back in slight shock as Emma is sitting in the exact same position however she has gotten closer to the nurse. the nurse, now feeling rather worried for her well being walks over to the bed and places down the tray of food. she walks towards the wall with the three paintings on it. the nurse examines them and after a short while says "these are very good Emma, certainly shows your...err imagination..." the nurse reaches up and touches one of the pictures with her finger and says "where did you get the red paint from?" at this point the camera cuts to Emma's hidden face and through are long black hair you can see she is smiling. the camera then cuts to the nurses point of view, she turns around and from out of know where Emma is standing right in front of the nurse and the audience. the nurse shouts "Jesus! Emma!" Emma smiles and we can now clearly see her face. her face is pale with a hint of blue and green, her veins show and two long blacks streaks of hair fall upon her face. her eyes are extremely dark and terrifying. she wears an orange top that reads "property of Pennsylvania Psychiatric re-habitation centre". her shorts are black and she has stripy black and white tights. on her feet she wears black converses. the camera cuts to the nurses face who is in extreme shock and fear, she then manages to stutter out the words "well..i'll just be...err...on my way then" and she walks past Emma slowly and speed walks towards the door which, what the nurse doesn't realise, is closed and locked. next there is an over the shoulder angle as the nurse tries and fails to unlock the door with her key. in the reflection of the door window the audience see Emma slowly walking towards the nurse clasping a knife. however the nurse doesn't see this as she is still trying to unlock the door (this builds tension you see) then the nurse looks up and sees Emma walking towards her smiling, she then notices the knife and turns around, her back to the door. the camera cuts to showing Emma walking towards the nurse, it then cuts back to the nurse who by this point is panicking. she tries to calm Emma down by saying "its ok Emma, im a nurse...i can help you ok..just tell me what you need!" it is to this which Emma then replies "Paint". then Emma slits the nurses throat and she slides to the ground. the scene then cuts. Emma is seen sitting on the ground, her legs are crossed and she is smiling. in her hand is a paint brush..covered in RED liquid. Emma starts to paint with this "red liquid" while humming calmly to herself. the camera then cuts to Emma's drawing. it is her name painted in the red liquid. this has to be my favourite ideas, however due to time limitations i had to re-think it and cut it down.

My Fifth Idea

my fifth idea is rather similar to my fourth but with some slight changes and modifications. i started to grow fond of the whole Mental Hospital thing and so i stayed with it. in this idea a nurse is seen, once again walking down a corridor holding a tray. however on the tray is now alphabet spaghetti. as before the nurse walks down the corridor, stops outside room 666 and it opens. Emma is sitting on a chair in the middle of the room, hands on her lap and hair in front of her face. then, as i said before the nurse hears a noise and so turns her head to the left, she looks back and Emma is sitting closer than before. the nurse then walks into the room and places the tray onto the bed. here's where the cange comes in, on the bed the nurse sees a pile of drawings. she picks them up and looks through them. Emma is still sitting in her position on her chair. the camera then goes into point of view of the nurse and the audience see the drawing more clearer. it then cuts back to an over the shoulder shot of the nurse. then she accidentally drops a drawing on the floor she says "woops...sorry" and bends down to pick it up. when she picks up the drawing and stands up it quickly switches to point of view of the nurse. she stands up and suddenly Emma is standing right in front of use, smiling as usual. it then changes out of point of view shot as to show the nurses reaction. she shouts "Jesus Emma! you scared the hell out of me!...boy you really like to sneak up on people dont ya!" and laughs nervously. Emma doesn’t move nor speak, she just stands there her head slightly tilted to the left. the nurse puts down the drawing back on the bed and starts to walk to the door, slightly more aware of Emma. she goes to the door and finds that it is locked, she says to herself rather sarcastically "oh great its locked....yaaay" she pulls out her key from her pocket and starts to unlock the door however it will not unlock. while she is doing that, again we see Emma walk slowly towards her in the doors window reflection holding a knife. at first the nurse doesnt see but then she looks up. the nurse turns around quickly with a rush of fear and shock in her face. all of a sudden Emma stabs the knife down but luckily she just misses the nurse by a fraction and it goes into the door on the right side of the nurses face. Emma tries again and this time it ends up on the left hand side of the terrified nurse. then she brings it down again but before it could stab the nurse she jumps down and the knife stabs the door where the nurses head just was. the nurse then manages to build up enough courage and kicks Emma in the legs, making her fall backwards. the nurse then jumps up, grabs the door handle and slams open the door. she runs as fast as she can back down the corridor. the camera then cuts back to Emma who is standing with a look of anger on her face. then Emma raises her hand and slashes the air. all of a sudden the camera cuts back to the terrified nurse who then falls to te ground, laying on her stomach. Emma is then seen bringing her hand backwards towards her and as she does the nurse is also dragged backwards. (you must be think "how can Emma drag her if she isnt touching her?" good question. that will later be discovered during the rest of the film, but not the opening.) Emma has an expression of amusement and sheer delight spread across her face while she carries on dragging her hand backwards. the nurse starts to scream and calls for help, her hands and nails scrape along the floor as she tries to grab onto anything she can find. she looks behind her and sees Emma still dragging her hand firmly backwards and smiling. the nurse the screams and is dragged back into the room, the door slams shut and screams are heard from the inside and then silence. it cuts back to Emma sitting crossed legged on the floor painting and humming, at the left side of her you can see the leg of the nurse, and a giant pool of red blood surrounding it. it then cuts to Emma’s drawing which of course is her name painted in the red liquid. i did also like this idea however it was still too long as all of this would not fit into slightly over 2 minutes. from my calculations it lasted for about 3 minutes at least which unfortunately was way too long.

My Sixth idea

Yep thats right, i have another idea and yes it is about a girl called Emma, it does involve a nurse and yes it does start of with a corridor. in this idea i started with three people (2 nurses and a doctor) sitting down, surrounding them are cups of starbucks coffee and crisps. one nurse is standing at the doorway and says to the others "see you tomorrow guys" the others reply with "bye sarah" and "see you tomorrow". the nurse then closes walks out of the room, closes the door behind her and yes you guessed it, starts to walk down the corridor. the camera then cuts to the right hand side of her. she carries on walking and passes a window. however as when she passes and leaves the frame of the camera, a red hand print appears on the window. it then cuts to an over the shoulder shot of the nurse, she checks her watch and walks on. then there is a fade and a young girl (Emma) is seen painting on a wall with her finger. however the audience cannot see what the painting is of. while she paints she quietly sings to herself. the camera then cuts back to the nurse, she walks past a door labelled 666. when the nurse walks past the door it opens slowly by itself. the nurse stops and turns around to see the door is fully open but there is know one there. she decides to walk into the room and inspect it. surprisingly it is empty. the nurse walks in further and, when she realises that there is no one there she turns around. however to her surprise the door has shut. she walks up to it and grabs hold of the handle, she turns the handle and starts to open the door slowly, all of a sudden an arm brushes past the right side of the nurses face and slams the door shut. the nurse, shook with fright turns around and sees Emma standing there. her hand firmly leaning against the door to keep it shut, she smiles and tilts her head to the left. then she lifts up her left hand to reveal a knife. Emma looks at the knife and then looks back at the nurse. The nurse stands there, her back up against the door. her right hand slowly and quietly reaches for the door handle. she finds it and keeps her hand firmly on it. then the nurse shouts "get away from me you freak!" as she says this she pushes Emma backwards, unlocks the door and runs out. (you can probably guess whats going to happen next) the nurse runs down the corridor, Emma, still staring at the knife raises are hand and slashes the air. the nurse falls onto her stomach. then Emma starts to drag her hand backwards and the nurse is dragged down the corridor. the nurse screams as her hands scramble for anything she can grab onto, just like before she gets dragged into the room, the door slams shut and screaming can be heard from within the room.  the camera then cuts to the wall where Emma was painting before and painted in an "unknown red liquid" spells the words Emma and a red hand print is underneath it. although i am rather happy with this idea it just didn't seem scary enough.

Th history of thriller and Thriller directors

What is a Thriller?

Thriller is a type of film genre that usual surprises the audience and creates suspense. Some of its features include cliff hangers and a twist in the plot to excite the audience and to create tension. There are also many sub-genres and hybrids included in the thriller genre. These include crime thrillers, psychological thrillers, action thriller, supernatural thrillers and many more.

The history of thriller

One of the first thriller movies was made in 1923 and was called Safety Last by Harold Lloyd.  This film is mainly known for its thrilling climax, a stunt performed on the side of a twelve-story skyscraper above busy city streets. The film was extremely successful and is still viewed as one of the best film of its genre. What makes this film so incredibly popular is the scene in which Harold Lloyd (the protagonist) hangs from a clock holding only just one hand of the clock, dangling above a rather busy street. This scene inspired many other filmmakers as well, in Back to the future Doc, one of the main characters in the plot, is made to hang from a clock. Other films such as Hugo (2011) also used this scene.

Not long after Safety Last, Alfred Hitchcock created The Lodger. This is a silent suspense thriller which was created in 1926. Based on a novel, the plot of the film is to hunt down a dangerous killer. However the wrong man is accused and is made to prove his innocence. With only a £12, 00 budget, the film was given good criticisms and is now one of the most famous and iconic thriller films of all time.

The next thriller film was the well known Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Made in 1931, this thriller film was directed and produced by Rouben Mamoulian and was nominated three times and even won an academy award. After that Alfred Hitchcock grabbed the wheel and ruled the thriller films making over ten films of the thriller genre, including Psycho and North by Northwest.

Iconic thriller directors

alfred_hitchcock.jpgA very famous iconic thriller director is Sir Alfred Hitchcock. Alfred Hitchcock was also known as the master of suspense as he was the creator of many thriller films including Psycho, Vertigo and Dial M for murder. These are thriller masterpieces as they include many iconic and famous features such as the spiralling eye and the ever famous shower scene. He also creates a lot of tension and suspense in his films using different camera shots and fast paced music.
In 1940 Hitchcock made his first American movie. Rebecca. It was a psychological dramatic thriller and had a lot of success. It won two academy awards and was nominated eleven times. However this was only the beginning of Alfred Hitchcock’s success.

In 1958 he made Vertigo. This is a psychological thriller film, however critics gave the film mostly negative reviews and critics and so it did not do as well as any other of Hitchcock’s pieces. However many people agree that this film is one of Hitchcock’s classics and should never be forgotten. What is iconic about this film is the infamous spiralling eye during the opening of the film. This is very iconic as Alfred Hitchcock is well known for his spirals and also represents him.

Two years after Hitchcock made Psycho. The film is a suspense horror and won four academy awards along with a brilliant review. The film also holds the very famous shower scene in which a young girl is stabbed repeatedly by a dark, shadowy figure in her shower. In the background there are very loud and sharp violins, composed by Bernard Herrmann, thus creating the perfect suspense and horror scene.
Furthermore, back in the 1960's, violent murders and nude women were uncommon. So this scene undoubtedly surprised and shocked its audience and making it one of the iconic and greatest horror films of all time.

nm0000229.jpgMy next iconic director is Steven Spielberg. Spielberg is famous for directing films including Jurassic Park, E.T and Saving Private Ryan. He also produced the famous Back to the Future, Men in Black and Super 8.

Aside from all this, Spielberg also directed Jaws. Jaws is one of the most famous and well known thriller films of all time. Made in 1975, Jaws was one of the highest grossing films of all time and won several awards and very positive reviews. The film is mostly famous for its soundtrack, produced by John Williams who is also the creator of the Jurassic Park, Star Wars and Superman soundtracks. The films soundtrack is partially known for its "DA-DUM", this is a very iconic section of the theme and is used in many other films and is very popular around the world. This is because the soundtrack in Jaws makes the villain (in this case a great white shark) seem unstoppable and powerful.

Jaws is also a very well known thriller because of it editing and effects. Back in the 1970s there wasn’t any special editing equipment that we have today. So they had to make do with a mechanical shark. However the editing and special effects were added and, to the 1970's audience, made a totally "convincing" shark. This then resulted in brilliant reviews and the films great success. It made $470,653,000 at the box office and is still a very popular thriller film today.

quentin-tarantino.jpegMy final iconic thriller director is Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino is the director of Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill. Pulp Fiction is a crime film with a lot of rich dialogue humour and violence. It stars John Travolta and Samuel Leroy Jackson. Critics claim that it is a postmodern film while others say it is a black comedy. The film had a budget of 8.5 million and made $212.9 million at the box office. He also directed Reservoir Dogs in 1992. It is an American crime film and was named the greatest independent film of all time. Although many critics disapproved of the film and stated that it was too disturbing to watch, it gained $14,661,007 at the box office and only had $1.2 million budgets.
