BBFC Research

What is the BBFC?


The BBFC was created in 1912 and stands for British Broadcasting Film Classification. it is an organisation which rates and gives film productions certain certificates. however they also rate and certificate video games and films and programmes released on DVD or Blu-Ray

Suitable for all 



This sign means that the film is suitable for anyone ages four years and above. there is to be no discrimination or use of drugs involved in the production. nor should there be bad language, sex or violence as this can cause anxiety of a child as they are very sensitive. horror scenes should be kept very mild and the theme should be appropriate for young children.



Parental Guidance


this means that children of a certain age, usually between the age of 8 or younger, watching the film must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Discriminating is rather unlikely to be accepted unless it is connected with either educational or historical context. Drugs are still unacceptable, however mild language and sex are allowed for only a brief moment. violence and horror are also allowed but only for a short period of time.  

 

 

Suitable for 12 years and over 




the film is suitable for those only 12 years or over, anyone under is may not be permitted to see nor purchase/rent the film. There should be mild usage of drugs and a short horror scene, however disturbing sequences are not permitted. dangerous behaviour such as self harming should not be portrayed as harm free and no dangerous weapons should be shown. There is to be moderate language and brief nudity. sexual activities should be shown only momentarily. also violence should be brief and un-detailed, for example do not show a lot of blood and gore. themes are also acceptable however it must be suitable for a teenager.





                                                      Suitable for 15 years and over




The film is only suitable for audiences 15 or above, anyone below that age are not permitted to watch nor purchase the film. The criteria is that it must not promote discrimination however mild horror is allowed. Dangerous behaviour should not be easy to copy and should not go into too much detail. Drug taking or drug use is acceptable, however highly dangerous drugs such as solvents are not permitted. frequent strong language such as "fuck" is acceptable however threatening and repeated use of the word may not be accepted. sexual activity may be shown but not in detail, and nudity is also acceptable without detail. gory images are also likely to be accepted however sexual violence is not. all themes allowed but have to be appropriate for a 15 year old.



Suitable for 18 years and over





the film must be  only shown to ages 18 or over. no one under the age of 18 may watch or purchase the film under any circumstances. detailed scenes of violence and dangerous acts are shown and explicit sexual activity is also shown. the film also includes breach of the law and can be based on criminal acts that have happened.



Suitable for ages only 18 and over 

the film can only be seen and purchased in special licensed cinemas or licensed sex shops. only adults aged 18 or over can see and purchase the film. R18 films usually contain explicit nudity and sexual activity. strong language and abuse is continually used also. 


 
My films ratings

from the information i have found i have decided to rate my film a 15. this is because there are no sexual refrences involved but brief swearing will be used. there will also be a lot of mild gore scenes shown.
